Rotary Limited Edition Watch

Once again, I found a watch I fancy. This time round, I am into skeletons.
Sad to say though, there aint that many skeleton out there that is affordable and chio at the same time.
The Rotary watch (Swiss made) seen above is a limited edition piece and damnit, there is only 500 pieces worldwide. I am resigned to not being able to get it.
On the contary, the Russian have made a skeleton watch that look pretty decent. I am not sure about trusting the Russian yet. In any case, this is a windup watch and its something I dun have yet.

Life after death

I was standing in the room. Standing by my Fon Fon Ru's side. She and her family were in deep prayers as her Ah Gong was leaving them that night.
I watched as the heart monitor fluctuated. His gasping of air slow. And before you knew it. Ah Gong has went to a better place.
Tears were heard all around. Withdrawn look were in each eyes. The passing of a beloved figure is too much to bear.
My thoughts were in disarray as well. I never witnessed losing someone right before my eyes. Its not something I hope to be around for, but strangely you know you have to be there.
As I thought this later, I realised I had not been a worthy grandson to my late Maternal Grandfather (Gong Gong) and my late Paternal Grandmother (Mama). I wasnt around when both of them were leaving.
Gong Gong passed on when I was 15. He went off at his home. A cosy setting with my parents and all his children (and some grandchildren) by his side. I wasnt there to send him off and I felt disgusted by this.
Mama passed on just 2 years back. She was hospitalise and went into a coma. I was there on a regular basis and she left in a hush the night after her baptism. I wasnt there for the baptism either.
However whats done cant be undone. I could only repay my gratitude to those who are still around.
Lately, we celebrated my Ah ye (Paternal Grandfather) birthday. He was a joyful old man who kept shaking our hands. I could tell that he is not sure we are his family but he is happy to be among a big crowd of people.
We brought him down to the garden and with a small cake and lighted candle left him with the biggest smile I have seen for a long time. We had wanted to bring him out for dinner as well, but his health could no longer endure the distance and hours.
Nevertheless, we were rejoice to see him smile.
(PS. Kinda pissed off when FIFA insisted Mandela to attend the World Cup finals)

Some watches are just too exclusive to own one. This cost 158K USD and I wonder if a cheap knock off could copy the design and get rid of 3 zeros.

Trying to swim but cant

It was my first trip to the dead sea and it was a memorable event.
The sun was scourging hot at 38 deg C. The sand was perhaps closer to 80 deg C. And after sweating the whole morning under the sun visiting a sandy palace, we couldnt be more glad to see the beach.
Well sorta...
We arrived at the dead sea with plenty of expectation. Wanted to try the buoyancy of the water the lowest point on earth. It said that no one can sink there. And true enough. The heaviest of us found that he could just float away.
The mud is reputed for its natural minerals and health benefits. Which is why we decided to Camo ourselves from top to toe. PS. its quite odd for 3 guys to help each other rubbed one another backs with the mud.
Anyhow, an interesting and painful lesson was learned here. One of my party (not the 3) came to the beach without proper footwear. As such he bravely ran to the showering point to soak himself first. The distance from our bags to it was abt 20 metre.
As the sun was hot, he had a hell of a time walking there. And when he reached, he was happy to have met with the cold shower. However the walk to the sea was abt 40 metres. And he bravely (stupidly) ran all the way thru.
I wore my slippers and took it off just 2 steps before entering the water. The heat alone was unbearable and I literally jumped into the sea. Now can you imagine the distance he walked and the pain he bear.
Upon soaking into the cooling waters, he felt blistering pain on his feet. The next thing he knew, he found that his sores had blistered. With the highest salt content surrounding him, he was in another level of pain.
This drives him to run out of the water and back onto the teppanyaki sands.
I should have taken a pic of those feet. It was a bloody sight. Something I would always remember whenever I go to the beach.
Oh and here's a shout out to that cool dude with the DSLR whom took our pics. Appreciated you sending us the link.

The rating
Every year you entered into a dark room and await the big boss long speech. He would talk about the big picture before zeroing into your performance. After which you either get a big hand shake or a small pat on the back.
I kinda anticipate that I wont be getting a promotion this year. After all, my previous year rating was average. Never did I suspect, I have gotten the same rating once more. It baffles me and got me wondering on effort != reward.
I spoken to a few colleagues about theirs. Each has differ opinion on how the system works. It seems that there is one common agreement.
You get a prolific project to run, you would be assure of a better rating.
Anyhow, I aint going to be thinking about this bullshit after this post.
Will get back on my feet and back to work. And once my big day has elapsed next year, I be happy to drop a letter and leave.

Back and I need a rest

Well I can never sleep on a flight. I just never figure out why? Could it be the cramp seats (nope A380 is quite spacious), could it be the distracting interactive entertainment unit then? (have watched Casino Royale 2 times)
I never know for sure
What I do know is that I sure can doze off in a boring training lecture in a small uncomfortable chair.
ps. do go for the upper deck if you taking the A380

First love
During my ICT, VB and I discussed abt the current music scene. It seems that Kpop is all rage but no one has any idea what they are singing about. And strangely this was what Jpop is to us when we were back in Poly (about 10 years now)
Back then, I fancy a few songs which were mostly Jap drama theme songs. Its hard to run away from them. When the malls and such were playing them frequently. Nowadays, the Jap tunes I listened to are mostly from anime. and they are a little less sad sounding (ie. more 'rock')
Anyhow, back then we were drawn to this particular song by Utada Hiraku's First Love. Its interesting to note that when I replay this tune, it drives me crazy. Now I hope this would do the same for you.
PS. I am strangely still a fan of morning musume. Dont ask me why

Resource Furniture
After watching this video, not only would this be helpful for space constraint city dweller, it would also do wonders for our nation apartment dwellers.
My place to be has a 2 smaller rooms which would give any owner a bit of headache. Its big enough to put a piano inside, but you wont be able to sit there and play a tune.
This is the size of the mickey mouse apartments that the developers have been building. Small, tight and too close for comfort. Personally I think this is just a way for them to maximize their profit (squeeze more rooms in less space) in this 'land scarce' country.
Anyhow, do enjoy watching the video. It sure makes the hongkong designed apartment look just as fun.
the end of LOST
After 5 years of following LOST, I am feeling awfully sad that it has ended.
Sure it started out with a big bang. Capturing the minds of all around. Its large casts of castaways, each with a sad past yet interesting past, were each given a choice to make.
The following season (2) then started to insert lots of confusing elements. Making us all LOST. What is a Hatch doing in the middle of nowhere. Who are the Others?
3rd season became the war that goes on between the Others and the survivors. Oh and if I forget to mention, the writers were clever to be able to insert new characters and kill of old ones.
Season 4 occurs in the midst of the silly writer strike. Ok I aint a writer and they have deserve more perks and a higher salary, but they sure have ruin the whole pace of the season. Anyhow, it explored on how some of the remaining survivors managed to escape the island and resume their old life.
Season 5 is a crazy one. Those remaining on the island have traveled back in time. Those whom left, were wary and ended up wanting to get back. And who is this Jacob whom was trying to be the wise old man.
Lastly this final season explore the what if. What if, the plane did not crash and that everyone has safely landed. And this became a parallel universe of some sorts.
I must say that I never am so intrigue by this imagination. The concept of the story draws you in and kept you riveting on the dynamic of the individual and the group. It now set the tone for better serials to include a large cast and the ability of the writers to kill off or revive a character.
Now that this has ended, I am feeling Lost once more. What is left to watch out there?

Home to be
After the confirmation of the banquet venue and the choosing of the photo studio package, we were left with 2 more big payments to settle. The first would be to get a pair of wedding bands. And the second would dwarf the rest in comparison, is a home of our own.
The search of our nest aint an easy task. There is the location, the housing size and most of all the pricing. The current value of properties now is madness. Public homes are priced to the condos cost that was just 10 years back.
Condo pricing have hit new heights and from the govt regulation of land, its unlikely to fall any time soon. Public housing prices are unregulated, leaving the owners the control of selling at a premium for the desperate.
Sad to say, I am in the sandwich group. Too "rich" to be able to get a first hand public housing and not rich enough to afford a private housing. Yet one has to start hunting around and look at all options.
After weeks of searching the web and visiting some of them, I found a place that I like. The rooms are spacious enough. The location is near my folks. The designs look great as well. The only drawback is that it wont be ready till early 2012. As there is a possibility that this likable unit would be snapped up soon, a booking fee is made without much ado.
PS. I have gotten a really high floor. And there is a sky garden above me. Would be cool to BBQ there.
The Gym membership

My gym is offering a great deal for current members. Sign up for 15 months and get 9 months free.
Which they can easily say sign for 2 years for this cheap price, but had decided to twist their promotions a little. Perhaps its the thought that you are getting 9 month free that would entice you.
Anyhow, my current subscription expired in Mar. I was keen to sign up for it. Interestingly I din and just kept waiting.
This is because, for the last 2 months, I been able to enter my gym freely. The staff there simply took my card without scanning and gave me my keys.
As this was so, I decided to keep it up and see how long I could get away with it.
And that lasted till yesterday.
I guess this new face at the desk was actually following the protocol which her seniors have long left out.

I really really dun need another watch. Already there are 7 which I could very much wear 1 every single day of the week. And they come in different styles, colors and faces. Virtually could match them with anything.
But this Phillip S+ark watch has caught my eye for its simplistic and arty design.

Photoshoots
I aint sure I would blog about my wedding plans. Oh ermm, if you din know by now, I have proposed and gotten a yes.
This comes to the headache part which all couples at my stage have to face. The planning.
First of, you need a wedding date. This would follow by a venue, which is mostly a reputable hotel or somewhere chic. Then comes the photoshoot session where you get to pose and play act :P Not to mention the house hunting and the renovation.
Most of the time the above does not follow any particular order. Any of them could come first and last.
We went to vivo last weekend to visit a wedding fair. After attending a handful of hard selling talks by the bridal studios, we had an idea on how much would a package cost and what to go for.
Mind you its no simple task. First off, I personally feel you should look about and see what each of them offers. And always start off by viewing their real life couples wedding albums to decide which style you want. There are various to choose from. The prices would not vary that greatly.
Second comes the bargaining. These places are ran by a traditional mindset. They would speak to you in mandarin and hackle around their "promotions". You need some experience here. After some earlier bargaining with the other studios, you get an idea of the market rate and what each offers. Make sure you squeeze out as much as you can.
What we learn is that each of them "play acts" with us. Every time we demand additional photos, they would say that its impossible to make money and that they need to speak to their bosses or that this is not the market practices. Its your money so do get a good offer from them. Do ask for the best and be ready to walk away if you are not keen.
In any case, whatever you are getting, do note that this is your only shot at it. You wont want to re-take your bridal shots if you aint happy with the results. So do look around with each studio and decide what you want.
Personally I have seen too much sunset shot with sentosa and night shot of fullerton. Both of which appears to be the standard template for these studios. These are what I aint keen about.
PS. most studios offer up to 5 years for your shots to be taken. As the prices is still fairly reasonable now and you aint thinking of getting hitch till years later, why not take a look and decide if its worth it to pay the deposit to get a cheaper deal now. Just my 2 cents worth.

Sympathy?
Not too long back, I was approached by a skinny young girl (SYG) as I made my way home. It was late and the last bus I caught has dropped me off at the almost vacant station.
As I got out of the station, I noticed that there was hardly any souls around. Except for this SYG (not a SYT) whom was walking ahead of me. In a short moment, she paused and turn behind. Seeing me, she hurried and approached me for questions.
She asked if I know where is the nearest phone booth and I couldnt answer that. I have been staying here for years but at this current tech age, I simply have no idea when is the last time I saw a pay phone.
She then followed up by saying that her phone batt is dead and needed to make a call. I din exactly want to lend her use my mobile. For all I know, she would make a Long distance call to an intentional military backed syndicate with nuclear capabilities. I just din trust her that much.
Her eyes appeared teary. It could be that she had a fight with her BF, just woken up from a long slumber or that she has some coke (not the drink). She asked a final time if I could spare her some change and ask for 50 cents. (not the rapper)
I produced as such and she left without a thanks.
Well it could be becos her mobile rang precisely at that moment and she had to made a run for it. After all, she had scam me for the price of a quarter of Yakun Ice coffee.
I guess I wont meet her again.

The Barista

Coffee has always a big part of making my day go well. Its something I cant deny that I need on a regular basis to perform.
As far back as I can recall, the very first coffee I sipped was made by my mom. I was just 10 then. I asked for a sip and my mom had this impression I would hate it. She was wrong.
Soon in my teenage years, coffee drinking became a social event. Starbuck and its like spurn up cafe joints all over. Everyone started to visit a cafe and spend their time chatting away. And yes, students came along too. Each taking up 1 table and 3 chairs to mug away for their endless exams. I recall, ice coffee or ice blended ones are the craze then.
Years later on my France travel, I was initially turned off by what the French offered. A small cup that contains a concentration of coffee in it. Its like 1 long sip and you are done. Where is the social interaction that comes with it? Where is the slow enjoyment of the brew?
And what is this nespresso?
It din take long after that that I became a coffee snob. I drink nothing but espresso (with sugar). I would encourage all that this is the only way you could enjoy the taste (not to mention the buzz).
Nowadays I am more catered to everyone taste. With Nessie sitting at my desk, I opened my own cafe joint. Anyone is welcome to come for a cup of cafe at any way they like it.
I can do latte, mocha, espresso, long black and macchiato. Just bring your cup.
PS. I would like to try ice blend, but hmmm a blender. Thats like a noisy machine.

The price for a dinner

After the date has been picked, the next step is to find a suitable place to host a dinner event my family and friends.
There is plenty of decisions to make. The location, the size, the cuisines, the settings and most of all, the pricing.
Much as I would have love to do a small intimate, western theme wedding dinner as my close bud had, I simply know its difficult for me. Firstly, my family is huge. Its like feeding a company of soldiers. Secondly, outdoor settings would be a killer for me as I tend to sweat easily.
I went about sending tons of emails and called up several places. After lengthy comparison of conflicting proposals, I managed to shortlist a handful of choices. A clear favorite choice was apparently the costly one as well, which lead us to look for other alternatives.
And this lead me to this interesting predicament. Spend a bomb on a gorgeous wedding venue for 350 guests, or spend less but have to make up a minimum of 400 guests.
Sighs

Very soon I would be out hunting for my own roof. With the sky high price and the restrictions place on public housing, my choices are limited.

Now take a moment to look around your bedroom. Does it feel about the same size as his apartment?

in between sickness

Now what do I mean by that? Does it mean its a period where I am well and between 2 major sickness. Well No.
In fact, I am neither feeling 100% nor having a flu as yet. Send me to a doc and they would only say, no fever and no MC. Not to mention, a waste of money.
And yet this feeling is killing me. I cant exactly get on with my normal activities. My taste bud is starting to tell me that food taste like porridge and porridge taste like crap. My muscle aches just by sitting here and I cant stop feeling cold.
Deep down inside, I had a strong feeling that my body is doing its best to fight this. They are like in a deadlock. Much like the watching golf, where you wont know who is winning without the commenter or the table standing. In fact, this is exactly like golf. Ever so slow and unexciting. Slowly killing me with the vast wastage of good soccer fields used to play tiny balls.
Perhaps I should take a day off tomorrow. I get to nuah in my bed. Stare at the jumping number. And have some peace and quiet.
PS. if you see me running abt orchard road tmr. Its not me if I do not acknowledge you.

Stuck in Europe

I was to meet her yesterday, but sadly the airlines all around Europe have grounded their fleet, thanks to a sleepy volcano whom had a serious case of diarrhea.
The air smells bad (sulphur dioxide). Its really smells like a baby poops. Before long the whole northern European would smell like each other.
Unlike a certain rich comedian, whom incidentally was suppose to be the new Q in James Bond (till they reboot the franchise), that took a long cab ride home. Most of the regular people are pretty much stranded there.
I do hope the authority checked that the air is safe enough and release the planes so that everyone could fly home. After all, no one wants to be this near to a giant arctic toilet bowl.

Proud of my school
I seldom say this, but I am sure am proud of my Secondary School.
Despite the over the top media coverage and the unfair reporting that has been overshadowing bigger events (ie. the darn volcano that is keeping my girl stranded), I know that our boys are viewed in a bad light.
Its strange to say this, but even the adults are behaving like kids.
But the truth is far from this. If I am to say it out here, I might never get the chance to keep this space around. In any case, in all that is fair and just, I would hope that both parties take a step back from this and look at themselves.
Its no doubt an offense to start a fight. An apology was offered and it seems that no one is keen to move forward with this. So what the next step? Should we start a civil suit and bring this up to the high court? Or should we just let bygones be bygones and let this issue rest?
And I do hope the papers would stop fanning the flame. Tons of worthy news out there and you have to put this on the front page. Shame on you. I am quite sure when the election campaign has started, you would once again up to your old games once more.

Live to die another day
Once again I did what James Bond has done so many times... NOOO I dont mean bedding women here. Instead, I escape from the put of death and live to die another day. So to speak.
When I was still home, a urgent message from a colleague has warned me about a security check. Once more they are searching for compliance and I know my baby Aiko would be faulted.
As I journey to work, I swapped my sim with an ancient nokia phone. One that is so old that you be amazed that it has color screens.
I hid Aiko in my spectacle case and put on my Clarke Kent disguise. Well if you look decent, they would think you are.
As I pass thru the gantry, I met with several whom were caught off guard by this check. They declared to the security and had their phones taken away. As I walked pass them I let out a grin. Its evil I know.
When my turn arrived, I was asked to empty my pockets. I showed off the nokia and he din pay attention. My bag was search thoroughly and when he found that my spectacle case was heavy, he opened it.
My heart raced as it happened.
I knew that I would be faulted and was prepared for the charges. Goodbye bonus. Its nice meeting you, I thought.
Strangely, he flipped thru and seeing there is no camera lens, he promptly put it back and let me pass. The giant CYBERSHOT embossed wordings was not noticed.
I quickly made my way up. Not wanting to look back. Not giving them a chance to retain me. And live to die another day.

My late Gong Gong

My maternal grandfather passed away when I was still in secondary school. And sad to say, I barely know him.
Growing up in an English speaking family, I was unable to comprehend the dialect that my gong gong was speaking. I could only guess its a mix of hainaness and others.
And though I din know him well, he made an effort to know all his grand kids by our names. Even if our names are in English. And yes he did pronounce mine in a funny manner.
What I did know abt my gong gong back then was that he was a Chinese doctor. One that could tell you all your problems just by the feel of your pulses pulsating onto his fingers.
And for this, I find him a great man.
PS. I din know his pic was found on this website, until my cousin pointed it out.

The smokers
My dad has been a heavy smoker even before I was born. He can easily burn up to 1 pack every 2 days, though I suspected this is a conservative guess.
My late grandma was even heavier. When I was a kid, we cousins pool together to buy a carton of cigarettes for her birthday. Well we din know better back then. It was our favorite grandma beloved pastime. And we just want to make her happy. (yeps you can buy a carton of cigarettes even you are 12 years old back then)
Anyway, my grandma suffered from the endless smoking and did pass on from a weaken health. This led me to think that some tough love is needed for my dad.
Getting him to quit is rather impossible, but I have to try. Decided that as a start, I would buy him a pack of lighter cigarettes with longer filters to reduce on his intake.
I ponder on what he would think if I were to buy him a pack. Well I would be finding out soon

To upkeep ones image
Lately I have been wondering, what is the value of Face again.
Came to know of a close friend whom appeared to be earning well but is sadly in the biggest debt.
He dresses well when we meet. Comes zooming down the street in his sporty wheels. And we always seems to find the classy place to go to. It seems like he is in fact earning well and in the capacity of taking off to Europe for a long vacation.
Yet sadly, this is far from the truth.
Sometime back, I blog abt the poverty cycle which one of my dear buddy was going thru. That dude comes from a poor family and without much education, could barely make ends meet.
In no doubt, my buddy is the one whom truly needs the support more.
Whereas my close friend's desire to upkeep his lifestyle and image have cost him dearly. It started from end 2008 when the stock market crashes. The job he was holding has left him with little income. This led him to fall back onto his savings and they didnt last very long. Months later, with savings depleted, the next time is to spend money which you dont have yet.
All credit card company, happily offer a credit line. "Take what you need, they say. Pay them back later, no hurry there." Dont forget about our fine print. So when the times come to pay back, what did he do? Well get from another credit line to pay back this.
The start of a declining spiral grows and the image falls apart. Depression and anxiety sets in. Chances are taken at the lottery, without much result. The free times are spend at home, with the excuse that he is tired and not keen to meet up.
When I found him, his image still shows the confident. However, it didnt take long for me to uncover the massive debts he is in. I ask him to consolidate the massive figures. I have to see what they are. And like the colors of wallstreet in late 2008, the redness of his debts shows.
Looking at him, I reprimanded him that things have to change. He is not a kid and doesnt need a harsh scolding. Still he needs someone to tell him off now, as a reminder for the future.
After which, its to the bank I went.

Tomcat

Before Tom Cruise became a hardcore Scientologist (frankly I still dun understand this "religion"), he was a pin up icon. A young dashing man whom many girls want to grow up and get married to. Yes including his current wife.
He did starred in this one movie which inspired many to consider a career as a fighter pilot. Yes I am talking about Top Gun. Where he is known by his callsign Maverick and flew the incredible F-14 Tomcat.
Ever since that movie, I was inspired to take up flying and somehow managed to wiggle my way into the airforce. Its there I went for a few short flying lessons and ended up finding the role of an aircraft technician to be a rewarding NS. It was however sad that I never get to be close to the F-14. The bird that was meant to be the F-111 replacement.
It was the aircraft that I would very much like to see in action, but alas the US has taken it out of service and the only remaining country operating it, just happen to be Iran. Strange.... aint it.
Hopefully one day, this aircraft would be on ebay and perhaps by then I could afford to bid for one.
sidenote: Val Kilmer aka sexy lips batman was in the movie as well as Iceman.

Placebo buttons

The advent of computer-controlled traffic signals make the walk buttons at pedestrian crossings on heavily trafficked streets obsolete. By the late 1980s, most (but not all) walk buttons in New York City have been deactivated yet people push them anyhow, either in ignorance, out of habit, or in the off chance the buttons did work.
Many large office buildings also have dummy thermostats to give office workers the illusion of control. Some even go as far as installing white-noise generators to mimic the hum of fans after the HVAC system is shut off.
The same goes for the close button in elevators. Most elevators built or installed since the early 1990s don’t have close buttons that work, unless you have a fireman’s key. People do push them anyhow, because the fact that the door eventually closes reinforces their belief that the button works.

I am a big fan of Sci-fi and even a bigger fan of comedy. There are just too many things to catch that I am running low on sleep time to complete them all
First up, Comedy. The funny bones that is in all of us. My watchlist are as follows.
1. Simpsons (ever green or yellow)
2. Top gear (Aint they suppose to be a auto show?)
4. Big Bang Theory (Never realise Nerdy comedy can be so fun)
5. Scrubs (I like the old series but this new one seems to capture the style)
Drama/Sci-Fi
1. Lost (Season 6 now. Have been drawn to them since an old fren share with me a disc)
2. V (they seem friendly)
Animes (where man are just boys)
1. Fullmetal Alchemist (brilliant story)
2. Gundam (new series starting)
I wish they bring back these
1. Sarah Connor Chronicles (I miss seeing Cameron)
2. Firefly (I miss seeing River)
3. Futurama (Heard they are coming back)
4. Full Metal Panic!
5. Star Trek (any generations)
6. Stargate (I like Macgyver)

Airshow 2010
Its my fourth airshow and I never seem to get enough of them. Here are some snippets. The tango between the Apache and F16. I think the Apache would win against the F16 in a dog fight.
All the exhibitors' and visitors' flags are flown here. Kinda cool huh
The US bomber flying real low. Its like its on a bombing run
I flew the Piper warrior 2 before. This brings back memories.
Cute little plane here.
Cuter little bird (with lots of arsenals)
The mighty Hercules
Some dude whom had an even longer lens before he swapped for something he can carry.
This is the cheapest food items I had found.
See you in 2 years time.
